Although there are a lot of people who do not completely understand the need for crate training, more people are learning. You shouldn’t try to crate train your dog unless you’ve given the process a lot of thought. If you don’t know what you’re doing, your dog training will be worse than doing nothing at all. The size of the crate is one of the things that you need to know when purchasing a crate for your dog. There are various sizes for a good reason. The worst thing that you can do is get your dog a large crate so they have room to roam. Of course that is true unless you own a big dog. The perfect crate is one that is tall enough for the dog to not hit its head and long enough where it is able to spin around. Too large a crate will completely defeat the purpose.
A large component of this instruction is that you will gain a far greater grasp on the housebreaking method. If the crate is too large and your dog can go to the bathroom on one side and lay down on the other, then you will never get it housebroke. Dogs will not urinate where they lie down. If you want to make sure your dog will not go to the restroom, then a small crate will do the trick.
Knowing how to crate train a dog is also about what you are doing when the dog is outside of the crate as well. After you release your dog from the crate you must bring him outdoors to the place where he should use the bathroom. Praise the dog for the good deed and go about your day. Food and water shouldn’t be put in the crate and the dog shouldn’t be left in the crate for extended lengths of time.

Do a simple check by running your hand along the sides, to makes sure there are no edges where the dog can be hurt by running into them. If a dog is crated for too long or if it feels stressed, it will look for ways to escape. If it gets cut then he or she may get an infection. Dog training is not a simple matter. In order for you, the trainer, to do it the right way, you must put the safety and health of the dog first, before you cause it injury.
Make sure that you are not using the crate as a punishment. Don’t tell your dog to go there when it has been bad. If your dog is afraid of the crate it won’t work. You want to create a comfort zone or a den like home with a crate. As long as your dog senses that the location provides safety and security, he won’t be bothered staying there while you’re out. If you are consistent with crate training you will have your dog housebroken in no time.
