So, how do you care for a Mastiff? Always remember that these are enormous dogs and they need more than just the usual way in taking care of these lovely gigantic pets. According to a neighbor who has his own Mastiff, you have to make sure that you have a regular ample supply of dog food around. Aside from a very hearty eater, Mastiff dogs gets hungry easily. From time to time, they need to eat. They’re not the same with any regular-sized pet dogs which you only need to be fed two or three times a day. His own Mastiff eats all throughout the day. After breakfast, there are at least 3 in-between meals before lunch. Before the day ends, his Mastiff can be fed up to three times more and after dinner, it’s cookies once again. He added that it’s usually easier to train and care for these gigantic dinosaurs if they are still Mastiff puppies. As younglings, these loyal pets are just any other regular dogs with normal size. But they can grow twice or thrice as big than any other dog when they reach the age of about a year.

Crate training is the first step in house training a new puppy. Its importance in house breaking a new puppy cannot be underestimated, nor can it be dispensed with.

Crate training is an integral part of basic puppy training, and knowing exactly how to carte train is very important.

Crate training without knowing what to do is just as good as not crate training at all. In fact, if a puppy is crate trained the wrong way, there would be no advantages gained, the puppy would not have learned or been taught anything good and the puppy may have been given a bad habit or two on the other hand.

Crate training is an established program with certain do’s and don’ts. It has its set advantages if done the proper way. There is a specific purpose in crate training, and to gain those ends carte training has to be done properly.

The basic and most important part of crate training is the size of the crate. The size of the crate used has to be directly proportionate to the size of the dog.

The uppermost need for crate training is to prevent the dog from peeing in the house, or in places he is not supposed to pee in.

By nature and basic instinct a dog will not lie down or sleep in its own urine or faeces. It will never pee or make its business in a place it has to lie down in. A dog is confined in a crate to prevent it from doing these things inside the house. While confined in a crate of proper size a dog will restrain itself from urinating or moving its bowels.

The crate has to be big enough for the dog to spin around on its feet. It should be just a few inches longer than the body of the dog from the tip of the nose to the end of the rear rump, and a few inches taller than the standing height of the dog,

The size of the crate should not permit the dog to jump up on its hind legs or move from one end to the other. If for example, a large crate is used for a small dog, it would pee at one end and sleep at the other.

What to put in the crate and when not to confine the dog in the crate is another very important part of crate training.

The only thing that should be in the crate is the puppys chew toy or play toy and nothing else. No food or water should be placed in a crate.

A dog should never be confined in a crate for too long a time.

The dog should not be sent to the crate or confined in it because it has done something wrong. The crate should not be used to punish the dog. If we use the crate to punish the dog, it is going to distrust the crate and become anxious about it

The dog should regard the crate as a place of safety and security, for it to be happy in it while it is alone and its owners are away from the house.

Knowing when, where and how to release the dog from the crate is also an important part of crate training

A dog has to be released from the crate periodically in an area where it can relieve itself.

The dog will relieve itself immediately it is let out from the crate. Once the dog has relieved itself it should be praised or rewarded to reinforce that peeing iside the house is not allowed.

The type of crate is another important aspect of crate training.  Most crates are made of steel. There should be no rough or sharp edges anywhere in the crate.

After being confined for a few hours the first time a dog will get agitated and try and escape. In attempting to do so it should not scratch, cut or hurt itself on the crate.

When you bring home a new puppy or new dog, the first thing that will be a worry for you, naturally, is how you will potty train the dog or puppy.  Although some folks will get lucky and get dogs from breeders who took the energy and time to train them, this won’t always be the case.  Indeed, much of the time, the new owners will be the ones responsible for any dog training.  This might be a daunting idea for many of us, but training dogs is actually much easier than it might appear to be.

Two traits that an individual must have when they potty train a dog are patience and consistency.  If you are inconsistant with your approach, it will take a while for your dog to learn the preferred behavior.  If you have the proper mindset and dedication, training a dog can be very enjoyable.  The first choice you must make in regards to training a dog is if it will use the bathroom indoors (pee pad/litter box) or your backyard.

If you decide that you would like to train your dog to use a pee pad, you will need to find a consistent location for the pad.  If the dog is unable to find the pad, they will become unsure of what to do.  You must create an environment where the dog knows exactly what is expecting of them.  When the dog knows what the expected behavior is, there will be fewer accidents.  If your dog has chosen another location for its restroom, you will have more work to train the dog.  You must be willing to work with your dogs current behavior to properly train them.

Decide where you want your puppy potty train indoors.  Put the pee pad down and show him where it is.  Most dogs will try to please you by using the pad.  If they decide that there is somewhere else in the house, like under the table, then you have found your training start place.  Put the pad down, show him where it is, and then gradually move it to where you want him to use it on a regular basis.

Training your dog to do its business outdoors is a different story altogether.  No matter whether you train it to go indoors or out, you must be sure to restrict water and food to the dog’s meal times only.  This helps to prevent any extra accidents.  Roughly 15-20 minutes after a dog eats or drinks, you must put it on the leash and take it out into a yard.  Don’t let the dog go just anywhere, though; you ought to lead it to the place in the yard that you have approved for this procedure.  Once the dog has gone, praise it and then give it a nice treat.

Unlike the dogs being trained for the pee pads, your dog will not have a means to properly relieve itself. How to potty train a dog for going to the bathroom outside also means teaching it how to hold its bladder.

Not everyone uses the same methods when it comes to house training your dog. What may work great for one dog, may not work well for another. Chances are that you will nor encounter any problems, but you can always try something different if you do. Training a dog can be time consuming so make sure that you are ready to give your undivided attention or this will not work out for either one of you.

If your dog needs to be potty trained outside, you can use crate training techniques. There is nothing harmful about this method of training as long as you are getting a crate of the right size, cleaning it, and making sure it is safe. There are some people out there opposed to crate training a dog. That type of people typically do not understand that dogs like to be in small enclosures.

A few guidelines can help you train your dog to avoid biting. you are never scolding your dog with violence.
You aren’t permitted to spank or strike since these techniques don’t apply to the way to house train a dog. Violence will always breed violence so be careful. Also, make sure that you are refraining from playing rough tug of war games where you are encouraging the dog to bite and growl.

‘Down Dog!’

This lesson is best taught outside, in a open area your dog trusts, free from ALL distractions. An empty park, your back yard, or a unclutterd room is ideal.

Start by calling your dog to attention with a favourite treat (cut up chicken, sausage or bologna). The idea is to get the dog to be positioned standing in front of you.. Now hold a little reward out in fron of his nose, and then place it towards the ground out in front of him. Keep it far enough away that he knows he cant hoave it yet though. Restrain him if need be. Use your selected 'down' command, voice and hand motion is best, and repeat it until he lays down for you.

After he lies down, let him have his treat by moving it to him, as he is lying down.

We dont want him to get the treat, until he has done the whole command. Dont offer him the treat for a half done job. Often, the dog wont know what to do first off. Coax him down by hand, and reward him when hes lying to satisfaction. Keep this up, you want to keep going until the dog learns that he is rewarded when he lies right down. It wont take long if he is mildly hungry!

Once your dog lays down with confidence, next hold the food a couple of inches off the ground away from him. What we hope is he will lie down in anticipation of the reward!

Chances are this might get him confused at first, but guide with your hand, pushing him down gently and giving the treat when he does well. 

After practise of this, start giving the ‘down’ command (hand motion and voice instruction) before you present the treat to lead the dog down.

Now gradually try to wean your dog of wanting the reward. You can get him to respond to a down sweep of the hand, and a 'down' command. Hold the treat at a fartehr distance each time, and place less emphasis on giving the reward with each repetition. Get your dog to now accept your praise as reward for following the hand and voice commands.
